About Us
Mount Sinai's Dermatology Department is fully committed to the comfort and well-being of its patients. We pride ourselves on the skillful diagnosis of dermatologic problems, working with each patient to find solutions that best fit his or her lifestyle. We offer a wide range of therapies, leading the way in pioneering clinical research, while training the next generation of physicians. Patient-centered service and attention to detail form the basis of our culture.
Because Mount Sinai is an academic medical center, we serve as a tertiary care center for the most complicated of dermatologic diseases, in addition to fielding the routine conditions of a community dermatology practice. As a teaching institution, we are privileged to have 12 rigorously selected residents, who work closely with each of our attending physicians to ensure 24-hour coverage of our patients, both in and out of the hospital.
Our Department consists of three major sections: Medical Dermatology, Surgical and Cosmetic Dermatology, and Dermatopathology. Our Chairman, Mark Lebwohl, MD, has spent many years creating a team of dermatologists whose areas of expertise complement each other, offering a breadth of clinical interests and specialization that span the gamut of dermatology. Dr. Lebwohl is a renowned medical dermatologist, having authored and edited numerous books including Treatment of Skin Disease, Difficult Diagnoses in Dermatology and The Skin and Systemic Disease. Dr. Lebwohl is board certified in Dermatology and in Internal Medicine. He specializes in psoriasis and skin cancer.
Diversified Patient Population
Our diversified patient population benefits from a team of doctors with diverse interests. Drs. Orit Markowitz and Helen Shim-Chang specialize in pigmented lesions and mole checks; Dr. Joshua Zeichner specializes in acne; and Dr. Jacob Levitt specializes in blistering diseases and most complicated dermatological disorders. Drs. Michael Stotsky and Gary Goldenberg successfully manage a wide array of general dermatological conditions, while Dr. Suhail Hadi is one the most expert practitioners in the world in the use of the excimer laser for the treatment of vitiligo and psoriasis. Three outstanding clinicians have recently joined the practice. Dr. Norman Goldstein is an internationally recognized expert in tattoo removal and hair loss; Dr. Emma Guttman, a gifted clinician and researcher, offers extensive patch testing for all types of occupational and contact dermatitis and inflammatory skin diseases. And, Dr. Susan Bershad, a leading dermatologist in Pediatric and Adolescent skin diseases, has developed and patented a novel treatment method for acne. Dr Goldenberg focuses on diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer, psoriasis, and dermatopathology.
Surgical and Cosmetic Dermatology
Our Surgical Division is headed by Dr. Ellen Marmur, vice chair of Cosmetic & Dermatologic Surgery, and is joined by Dr. Hooman Khorasani, chief of Mohs, Reconstructive & Cosmetic Surgery. Also leading our surgical effort are Dr. David Kriegel, Director of Dermatologic and Mohs Surgery, and Dr. Heidi Waldorf, Director of Laser and Cosmetic Dermatology. These talented physicians utilize the latest techniques in Mohs, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgery. They specialize in removing skin tumors while optimizing cosmetic outcomes. In addition, they offer a wide range of appearance-enhancing procedures, including Botox, fillers, state-of-the-art lasers, and liposuction to name a few.
Dermatopathology
Our Department of Dermatopathology is led by Dr. Robert Phelps, a superb diagnostician who is board certified in Dermatopathology, Dermatology, Pathology and Immunopathology. Dr. Phelps has devoted his career to training residents and dermatopathology fellows in his craft. His Department is responsible for the difficult job of clarifying diagnoses via microscopic analysis of biopsied tissue specimens. Our medical and surgical dermatologists rely heavily on the outstanding work of the Department of Dermatopathology in diagnosing and treating our patients.
