What We Do

All of our work as researchers, clinicians, and educators has but one goal: to diagnose and treat liver disease quickly and to give our patients the best possible chance of living a full, active life.

We consult regularly with colleagues to ensure that we are providing the best, as well as the latest, care. Our goal is to evaluate our patients carefully, and develop a treatment plan that helps arrest or reverse disease. We work closely with key Mount Sinai specialists in surgery, radiology, and pathology -- all of whom are highly regarded in their specialties.

Through routine patient education and counseling, we do our best to assist our patients in managing chronic disease so that they can enjoy the highest quality of life possible.

Like many other chronic diseases, chronic liver disease does not “go away.” However, medical therapy for many liver diseases is becoming more effective. For some conditions such as Hepatitis C, we now talk in terms of “cure” in many cases. No matter a patient’s age, gender, or level of activity, early diagnosis is critical in preventing deterioration of liver function and liver failure.

Studies – including our own investigations -- show that early and aggressive treatment can help limit complications and help ward off end-stage liver disease. Our goal is to keep patients alive, active, and healthy. Timely treatment helps avoid potential complications, including the need for surgery or transplantation.

Patients with liver diseases requiring hospitalization for treatment or surgery are admitted to The Mount Sinai Hospital, where physicians from the Liver Diseases FPA work with multidisciplinary treatment teams to ensure that our patients’ medical, nutritional, and psychological needs are met during their hospital stay as well as after discharge.
